Vehicle Insurance

City Manager Chris Murray is recommending that non-union staff who use their personal vehicles for city business purposes be extended $200 per year for additional insurance costs incurred for work use of their vehicles effective January 1, 2013.

Unionized City staff currently receive this benefit.

Murray’s report says eligibility would have been 14 staff in 2011, 11 in 2012, and 6 thus far in 2013. Many City staff use City-owned vehicles for their duties. Others, such as the City Manager, General Managers, and Mayor, are issued City vehicles as part of their compensation packages.

City Manager/General Manager Car Allowance

The agenda for today’s meeting says the committee will go behind closed doors to discuss the car allowances for the City Manager and General Managers. As it is a compensation matter, the committee is legally allowed to shut the public out of this discussion.

While the public will not be allowed to know the reasoning, the sunshine list ensures we get some picture of how much car allowance is issued by Council.

Council can legally shut the public out, it doesn’t mean they have to. A transparent Council that has confidence in its citizen’s ability to understand goverance would debate this in public. We’ll see if our Council decides to.

Livestream starts at 2pm.
