Hamilton Police Services Board for April 2014 [Live @ 4pm]

A packed Police Services Board agenda for April includes the annual reports from the Professional Standards Branch, Police Use of Force, 2013 Crime Statistics, and the Crime Prevention Report.

Chief of Police Glenn De Caire is presenting on his position that police officers facing serious disciplinary charges should not automatically receive pay while on suspension, as it currently required by the Police Services Act. Chief De Caire would like that to be determined on a case-by-case basis by the Chief of Police for each service.

The fallout of the March delegation by Norm Dorr, father-in-law of the late Steve Mesic, is on the agenda. The late Steve Mesic was shot and killed by Hamilton Police during an incident on June 7, 2013. The SIU found no criminal responsibility by the officers involved.

Mr. Dorr’s March delegation was heated, he made strong statements against the Hamilton Police Service, and called for the Chief’s resignation.

In response, the Senior Officers Association submitted a letter to the Police Board expressing its disappointment that the Board allowed the delegation in violation of policy (Mr. Dorr had not submitted his delegation in writing in advance) and that the Board allowed accusations to be made without challenge.
